For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a broadcast meteorologist. Growing up, I felt a calling to stand before a camera, sharing vital weather information with my community. That dream became my reality, and for 25 years, I thrived in broadcast meteorology. The work was exhilarating, especially during critical moments like covering a severe weather outbreak with dangerous nighttime tornadoes—a moment that earned me an Emmy nomination. But nothing has stuck with me more than the day I reported on Hurricane Katrina and learned the levees had broken. Moments like these made me realize the immense responsibility of translating complex, often life-threatening weather information into something clear, relatable, and actionable.
Yet, the career came with sacrifices. The long, unpredictable hours often meant going days without seeing my wife and family. While I loved the work, I began to wonder if there was a way to pursue my passion while having more control over my time.
The answer came unexpectedly during a short course at a meteorology conference. I met several forensic meteorologists and was fascinated by their work. It opened my eyes to a new career path where I could still use my expertise but on my own terms. Transitioning into forensic meteorology was a leap of faith, one filled with uncertainties. I had to overcome the fear of the unknown—leaving the comfort of a steady paycheck and stepping into the challenges of running my own business. Faith and family became my anchors, and they continue to guide me.
One of my first cases involved a wrongful death lawsuit. It was emotionally taxing, but I knew my testimony could make a real difference. Providing expert witness testimony helped the family achieve some measure of justice, and I realized how fulfilling this new career could be.
The skills I honed during my broadcast career—communicating complex science in simple terms, working with diverse personalities, and staying calm under pressure—proved invaluable. Today, I’m proud to say that every forensic case I’ve worked on has led to a successful outcome for my clients. While I can’t promise that will always be the case, it’s a record I work hard to uphold.
Another thing I’m proud of is my unique combination of credentials. I hold triple certifications: the Gold Standard AMS Seal, the National Weather Association Seal, and EPA certification for environmental compliance. As far as I know, I am one of, if not the only meteorologist in the world with this combination. It’s a level of expertise I’m deeply committed to, and I’m available to my clients whenever they need me—24/7.
Forensic meteorology has changed how I approach science. In broadcasting, you focus on immediate communication; in forensics, you dig deeply into the methodologies, uncovering hidden details that others might miss. I’ve uncovered weather data that no one else could find, and knowing that my work has helped legal cases, insurance claims, and individuals seeking storm damage compensation is incredibly rewarding.
I aim to continue growing my business while maintaining the excellent customer service my clients deserve. I also see exciting opportunities to integrate AI and climate science into my work. While my sustainability and environmental consulting is currently separate from my forensic practice, I believe there’s potential to bring these fields together.
One pivotal moment in my journey was attending a weather conference in Milwaukee. I met representatives from Climate Central, and their message hit home: we must protect our planet and ensure clean air for future generations. That experience reinforced my commitment to using my skills to solve immediate problems and contribute to a more sustainable world.
If I could give one piece of advice to anyone considering a career shift, it’s this: don’t leap without a Plan B—and maybe even a Plan C. Even if you’re unhappy where you are, take the time to build your backup plans. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
Today, I’m living proof that you can follow your dreams, pivot when needed, and find new ways to make an impact. The journey wasn’t always smooth, but every step brought me closer to where I am now—a place where I can do meaningful work, be there for my family, and keep striving to leave the world a little better than I found it.
